The Curse Of Carlisle

In 1525 the reivers had become such a nuisance that the then Archbishop of Glasgow, Gavin Dunbar, put a curse up all the reivers of the borderlands. the curse was 1,069 word long.  for the millenium the local council commisioned an art work based on the curse,Since the installation of the sculpted granite “Cursing Stone” inscribed with a 16th Century curse in one of Carlisle’s museums in 2001 misfortune has plagued the city.

Livestock herds around the city on the border with Scotland were wiped out by foot-and-mouth disease, there has been a devastating flood, factories have closed, a boy was murdered in a local bakery and Carlisle United soccer team dropped a league. white witches believe that a curse only exists if you believe in them . interesting topic im going to go visit the stone myself to have a look.

confusion is over

for the last two weeks i have been in a bit if a rut finally it came to me at 5am this morning, its not one building i should be looking at, its the whole area of carlisle areas that i find interesting, so i will look to my surroundings more, maybe areas of public interesting and find something different and unique about them.can one area represent the whole thing ??

word of the day

EPHEMERAL:

Beginning and ending in a day; existing only, or no longer than, a day; diurnal; as, an ephemeral flower.
Short-lived; existing or continuing for a short time only.
Anything lasting but a day, or a brief time; an ephemeral plant, insect, etc.

Caldewgate

looking at the caldewgate campus i find the outside of the building very interesting visually, the red brick work mainly, i think i will have to look into the history of the building to find other links to it.

work of the day

TOPOGRAPHICAL; concerned with the detailed description, esp. by means of surveying, of particular localities, as cities, towns, or estates.
the relief features or surface configuration of an area.
the features, relations, or configuration of a structural entity.
a schema of a structural entity, as of the mind, a field of study, or society, reflecting a division into distinct areas having a specific relation or a specific position relative to one another.

the detailed mapping or charting of the features of a relatively small area, district, or locality.

wrapping up the reichstag

i have decided i want to look in to the building that my work area is in which is at the caldergate campus, i have been looking at artists that work with building’s imparticular the outside christo and jeanne-claude, do just that they wrapped up the reichstag which is a massive buliding. they thought about it in 1971 did drawing and plans but i wasn’t realised till 24th june 1995. it remained wrapped for 2 weeks , material used was thick woven polypropylene fabric, i don’t think id do something like this to caldergate but its good source to look at.

Word of the day.

EPISTEMOLOGY: a branch of philosophy that investigates the origin, nature, methods, and limits of human knowledge. Epistemology asks the question “How do we know what we know?”

Rachel Whiteread

Viewed from the outside, the purpose of a door is to open, from the inside, its meaning is the opposite. The function of the individual book is to be read, but a shelf of books is always sculptural, the same can be said for a building, it has a funtion on the inside , but on the outside is sculptural, i like the idea of taking the outside of the building and moving it inside.

word of the day

PHENOMENOLOGICAL: the study of phenomena, A philosophy or method of inquiry based on the premise that reality consists of objects and events as they are perceived or understood in human consciousness and not of anything independent of human consciousness. A movement based on this, originated about 1905 by Edmund Husserl.
have been trying to read a book on site- related art, made me realise there is alot words out there i dont know and it gave me the idea for word of the day, the first one was this particular beauty.
